Unit 5
The Jeffersonian & Jacksonian Eras
(1801-1845)
This unit will incorporation the Jeffersonian Era, defined by the Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark Expedition, and the War of 1812, often referred to as the "Second American Revolution". In addition, students will examine the controversial Jacksonian Era of American history, which included the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the Trail of Tears.

Unit 5 Vocabulary Terms & Definitions
War of 1812: also known as the Second War for Independence, fought between Great Britain and the United States from 1812 to 1815.
​
Siege of Fort McHenry: also known as the Battle of Baltimore, a sea and land battle fought in September 1814.
​
Star-Spangled Banner: the national anthem of the United States; written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 and officially adopted by U.S. Congress in 1931.
​
Battle of New Orleans: the final major battle of the War of 1812.
​
Treaty of Ghent: peace treaty that officially ended the War of 1812 in December 1815.
​
Era of Good Feelings: refers to the period of 1817-1825 during the presidency of James Monroe.
​
Compromise of 1820: legislation that allowed slavery in the Missouri territory, but not in any other location west of the Mississippi River that was north of 36 degrees 30 minutes latitude.
​
Monroe Doctrine: an 1823 policy that stated any intervention by external powers in American politics is a potentially hostile act against the United States.
​
Jacksonian Democracy: movement that championed the rights of the common man.
​
James Monroe: fifth President of the United States (1817-1825).
​
Louisiana Purchase: the territory gained from France in 1803.
​
Lewis and Clark: expedition sent by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the northwestern territories of the United States.
​
Thomas Jefferson: third President of the United States (1801-1809).
​
Jeffersonian Era: the time of the Jefferson presidency that was characterized by an emphasis on democracy and republicanism.
​
Sacajawea: the Shoshone woman who helped the Lewis and Clark expedition.
​
John Quincy Adams: sixth President of the United States (1825-1829).
​
Andrew Jackson: seventh President of the United States (1829-1837); known as "Old Hickory".
​
The Alamo: site of the most famous battle of the Mexican-American War in 1836,
​
War Hawks: young group of politicians, mostly from southern and western frontier states, who came to power in the 1810s.
​
Francis Scott Key: author of the Star Spangled Banner.
