Overview
The purpose of Eighth Grade U.S. History is to allow students to develop a deeper understanding of the evolution of culture of the United States. Through a close and analytical study of eras, events, individuals, and forces of change, this understanding is advanced through a combination of selective factual knowledge and appropriate analytical skills. Our course of study will also incorporate world events that overlapped U.S. history, including World War I and World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War Era.
 
Skills emphasized include:

  • Analyzing documents and historical text

  • Project-based learning (PBL)

  • Analytical writing

  • Collaboration

  • Socratic seminar 

  • Note taking

  • Public speaking

Grading Policy

Assignments will be graded using a point scale and will be as follows:


Unit Assignments: 50 points

  • Modules

  • Foldables

  • Reading Activities

  • Document-Based Questions (DBQs)

  • Class Notes and Vocabulary

​

Projects: 100 points

  • Projects completed independently


Vocabulary Tests: 100 points

  • Announced one week in advance

  • Students identify terms (definitions provided)


Unit Tests: 100 points

  • Announced two weeks in advance

  • Tests will range from 20-25 questions

  • Composition Notebook

  • Ear buds

  • Colored pencils

  • Small scissors

  • Glue sticks

  • Pencils (extra lead for mechanical pencils)

  • Blue or black pens

  • Multiple colored highlighters

  • Index cards (3.5" X 5")

  • Personal pencil sharpeners
