Unit 3

The Revolutionary Era

(1754-1787)

This unit will incorporate the causes of the American Revolutionary War, including the French and Indian War, Boston Massacre, and Boston Tea Party. Students will examine the roles of the Continental Army and Colonial Militia and the major battles of the Revolutionary War. Finally, students will be able to discuss the end of the Revolutionary War, including Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown in 1781.

Unit 3 Vocabulary Terms & Definitions

​Loyalist: one who remained loyal to Great Britain.

Patriot: one who fought for the independence of the American colonies.

Levy: to impose or collect a tax.

Minuteman: a colonist trained to fight at a moment's notice during the American Revolution.

Massacre: the killing of many people who are not able to defend themselves.

Battle of Lexington and Concord: the first battle of the American Revolution in 1775.

Boycott: to protest by refusing to buy a certain product or service.

George Washington: the first President of the United States and Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Lord Charles Cornwallis: commander of the British army during the American Revolution; surrendered at Yorktown in 1781.

Paul Revere: became famous for alerting the colonial militia the British were coming prior to the Battle of Lexington and Concord in 1775.

John Adams: a founding father and second President of the United States.

Thomas Jefferson: a founding father, principal author of the Declaration of Independence, and third President of the United States.

Benjamin Franklin: a founding father and accomplished writer, scientist and diplomat.

Battle of Yorktown: the last major battle of the American Revolution in 1781.

Boston Tea Party: occurred in 1773 when the Sons of Liberty dumped chests of tea into Boston Harbor in protest of British taxation of the American colonies.

Redcoat: nickname given to British soldiers due to their distinctive red uniforms worn during the American Revolution.

Continental Army: the primary military force who fought for independence from Britain during the American Revolution.

Declaration of Independence: the statement from the Continental Congress declaring the Thirteen Colonies as sovereign, independent states from Great Britain.

Thirteen Colonies: the original colonies along the Atlantic coast of North America belonging to Great Britain.

"No Taxation Without Representation": the slogan and primary grievance against Great Britain by the Thirteen Colonies.
